Peter Hall Performing Arts Centre wins Cambridge award 19.03.20

The Peter Hall Performing Arts Centre has jointly won the Craftmanship Award at the Cambridge Design and Construction Awards, also picking up a Commendation in the Best New Building (Large) category. The judges praised the ‘elegant arts building … carefully designed to a tight sustainability agenda’ and the ‘beautifully conceived and finished’ interior. Battersea Arts Centre has won the Wandsworth Design Awards Mayor's Prize for its "exemplary and scholarly restoration". BAC was also awarded a Restoration and Conversion award by the panel of judges.

Haworth Tompkins have won an invited competition to design a performing arts centre in Bergen. Along with our partners, Norwegian practice HLM, we will be refurbishing 'Sentralbadet', the modernist 1960 building by architect Halfdan Grieg. The building, formerly housing Bergen's city swimming pool, will be transformed into a venue for Carte Blanche, Norway’s national company for contemporary dance, and the theatre group BIT Teatergarasjen.

Haworth Tompkins have won an invited competition for a residential scheme at Finchley Memorial Hospital in north London. We are working with Community Health Partnerships, part of the NHS, on creating 130 affordable homes for NHS staff. Outline planning for the landscape led proposal was submitted in September, with final completion anticipated in 2023.

Kingston School of Art was part of London Open House Festival, showcasing buildings around the capital that aren't always open to the public. As the visits can't currently take place in person, Open City produced a film tour of our recent refurbishment at the Mill Street Building, which can be viewed here. The tour gives insight into the process of this retrofit, and the KSA ethos of Thinking Through Making.

Diana Dina, Head of Sustainability and Regenerative Design at Haworth Tompkins, is taking part in the RIBA Smart Practice Conference starting on 30 September. Haworth Tompkins have won Practice of the Year in the AJ100 Awards for 2020. We were also named New Member of the Year for our "business success and the quality of [our] work."

Haworth Tompkins has been shortlisted for four awards at the NLA Awards this year. Battersea Arts Centre has been shortlisted in both the Experiencing Culture category, and for the Community Prize celebrating community-driven design and collaboration. Kingston School of Art is a contender in the Learning category, and is also up for the Environmental Prize which recognises the most sustainable projects in the capital. Winners will be announced later in the year.

The Den, our nomadic theatre auditorium for the Manchester Royal Exchange, has been shortlisted for a Wood Award. Materials are recyclable or compostable, designed for minimal environmental impact. The structure is a slender larch and hemp rope frame, so light that it requires no foundations. Fixings are simple and exposed and the entire structure can be dismantled, transported and rebuilt within a week. The awards will be announced later this year.
