Planning permission for Families and Homes Hub 21.07.21

Our proposal for a new Families & Homes Hub, for the London Borough of Waltham Forest, has received planning permission. The design at Wood Street provides a small cafe at ground floor, a Families & Homes hub over ground and first floor, alongside 67 homes for local people, half of which are allocated as affordable. The tenure blind scheme has a welcoming single residential entrance, large window openings and a communal garden area. Completion is targeted for Spring 2023. For more details, please click here.

Gardner Close, our latest project for Pocket Living is now complete. The 20 one-bedroom apartments were designed for first time buyers who live and work in Redbridge. All the homes are now sold, with residents’ holding moving in parties in the garden. The trellis for climbing plants, with it’s distinctive pink metalwork, will develop over time helping this former brownfield site settle into the backdrop of the adjacent mature trees. Work has commenced on site for the Phase One, Pembroke College Mill Lane development in Cambridge. This phase will see the redevelopment of a number of existing buildings, providing new teaching facilities for Pembroke College, as well as a new café and social spaces. The existing United Reform Church will be transformed into a performance and lecture space for both Pembroke College and the University of Cambridge, supported by a new build foyer, gatehouse and gallery and courtyard garden. Work is due to complete towards the end of 2022, ahead of the start of Phase Two.

Our residential scheme for Community Health Partnerships has been granted outline approval by Barnet Council. The proposal includes up to 130 affordable homes for NHS staff in four new buildings, ranging from three to five storeys of accommodation, with communal facilities in which staff can socialise. The housing, adjacent to Finchley Memorial Hospital in north London, will have access to landscaped spaces with trees, vegetation, and planting to create greater biodiversity for existing and new residents.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have visited the Theatre Royal Drury Lane ahead of the public opening next month. The Grade I building has been restored throughout, with significant improvements made to the auditorium and front of house areas. To celebrate this, there will be various summer events so the building can be enjoyed by visitors and audiences, with the Disney musical, Frozen, opening in late-August.

Haworth Tompkins are working with Perth-based Edith Cowan University on their City Campus project. We are assisting Lyons, our Australian partners, with the strategic masterplan of the whole scheme, and focusing on the new home for the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) within the City Campus. Every year students, staff and guest artists collaborate to present over 300 public performances at WAAPA – more productions than any other arts training institution in Australia. To accommodate this, the venue will include multiple performance spaces for the range of disciplines studied, as well as foyers, bars, rehearsal rooms, and the associated production and design spaces.

Signstrokes is a linguistic project for the deaf community founded by Chris Laing of Haworth Tompkins and Adolfs Kristapsons. Through their online resource they seek to inform British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters and users of BSL about architectural terms. Chris is running two workshops at the LFA this year, on 25 and 28 June. These are an opportunity to gain an insight into the journey of the project so far, pick up your hands and consider how to describe spaces with a visual language. Haworth Tompkins are working with Kensington and Chelsea Council on proposals for a new nursery and children’s centre combined with social rent homes. This will replace an existing nursery on a site next to Westfield Park in an area where there is an established history of children claiming the space for makeshift play. Ambitious environmental performance targets for the new building are set by the borough’s new Zero Carbon Development Strategy, which aims towards Passive House standards.
