Haworth Tompkins are working with Kensington and Chelsea Council on proposals for a new nursery and children’s centre combined with social rent homes. This will replace an existing nursery on a site next to Westfield Park in an area where there is an established history of children claiming the space for makeshift play. This started when parts of the original terraced streets were cleared following bomb damage from World War II. They would defend their new found space by laying down in the roads to stop vehicles passing. Eventually this space was turned into a park and later a nursery was added. The project aims to continue the history of children using the space by carefully combining the different uses as well as improving the accessibility and prominence of the site. Ambitious environmental performance targets for the new building are set by the borough’s new Zero Carbon Development Strategy, which aims towards Passive House standards.
Haworth Tompkins picked up three awards at last night’s BD Architect of the Year Awards ceremony including the coveted Gold Award for the 'best of the best', as well as winning Best Architect Employer of the Year, and Higher Education Architect of the Year.
