We are so pleased to see The Court Theatre continue to receive industry recognition, with multiple honours at Friday night's Property Council New Zealand Industry Awards, including the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Judges' Choice Award.Alongside the overall judges' award, the project received Excellence Awards in both the Warren and Mahoney Civic, Health and Arts category and the Resene Sustainable Building category.
Chief Judge Andy Evans described the project as a theatre whose impact extends beyond its performance spaces. “This is a theatre, but it behaves like a community building. It has been designed around the people who use it, from performers and production teams to audiences and visitors moving through the theatre. That clarity of purpose is what makes it special.”
The awards follow further success at the Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects 2026 Canterbury NZIA Awards where The Court Theatre received a Regional Architecture Award in the Public Architecture category, progressing to the National Awards later this year.
Roger Watts, Director at Haworth Tompkins, said: “These awards recognise the collective ambition behind a project that is about far more than a theatre building. From the outset, our aim was to create a place that celebrates making, supports creativity at every stage, and reconnects The Court Theatre with the life of the city. It is especially rewarding to see the project recognised for its civic contribution, sustainability and commitment to community.”
