Battersea Arts Centre has been awarded the Roof Slating and Tiling Award from The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, one of the historic Livery Companies in the City Of London. The awards, given every three years, recognise craftspeople in the construction industry and their specialist knowledge and skills.
The Grand Hall roof has been reconstructed by Richardson Roofing to faithfully match the original pitched roof profile and to fit the brickwork gable walls which survived the fire. The new roof is clad in ‘Penrhyn’ Welsh slates as per the original Victorian design. Beneath this traditional slate covering lies a new high-performance roof construction comprising thermal & acoustic insulation, cement fibre-board layers for acoustic mass, and breathability & weather membranes. The outer layers, including the slate covering, are isolated acoustically on resilient foam pads, to prevent low-frequency bass noise breakout. This allows the hall to be used for musical events without disturbing BAC’s neighbours.
