‘The Den’, a pop-up theatre built from natural and recyclable materials, has opened in Stalybridge, Tameside. The lightweight structure was commissioned by the Royal Exchange Manchester and has been designed with structural engineers Expedition and built by Xylotek. Constructed, dismantled and operated by the community, the theatre is a part of the wider ‘Local Exchange’ programme that aims to re-introduce culture and the arts into areas where these kinds of spaces have been lost. The theatre will play host to a series of performances and will serve as a new cultural focal point for the Tameside community over the next few weeks, before embarking on a tour of the Greater Manchester area next spring.
