Our project for Malmö Stadsteater has started on site. The refurbishment of the 19th century Swedish theatre, originally designed as a circus amphitheatre, includes reconnecting the auditorium to the street by the creation of a new link building that part covers an existing courtyard, providing an informal events space. Alongside the redevelopment of the front of house and café, the project also involves a full refurbishment of the auditorium, increasing capacity to 520 using an adaptable layout, making it more suitable to host the theatre’s expanding repertoire. The material aesthetic is durable and expressive of each material’s natural characteristics with fixings and construction details exposed ‘on-show’ as much as possible. Materials include reclaimed cotton from denim clothing reprocessed as acoustic felt, refurbished ‘as found’ concrete floor surfaces, Swedish pine plywood joinery, visible fir timber floor joists, recycled rubber sheet flooring and restored brickwork. Our delivery partners in Malmö, White Arkitekter, is overseeing the works which will continue throughout 2022. The theatre is planned to reopen in 2023.
