Strategic multi-site masterplan & decarbonisation study
Haworth Tompkins has been working with Trinity Hall, Expedition Engineering and Gleeds to develop a strategic multi-site masterplan and decarbonisation study for the College Estate. Founded in 1350, Trinity Hall is one of the oldest Colleges in Cambridge, with an identity that is strongly associated with its intimate scale, diverse architecture and characterful gardens. In 2022, we were commissioned to prepare a Masterplan to help build consensus around a vision for the future, and to develop a flexible framework for multiple strands of intervention at varying scales of cost, complexity and impact. The process culminated in a phased and costed strategy for the four key operational sites within the College Estate, which includes a number of listed buildings as well as registered gardens and landscape.
The Masterplan is both granular and thematic in approach; and includes refurbishment proposals for individual buildings and services infrastructure as well as identifying opportunities for strategic interventions and major projects. The study is underpinned by a holistic approach to sustainability that addresses opportunities for energy efficiency and decarbonisation as well as the potential for ecological and social enhancements across the Estate.
The Masterplan is intended to be a living document that continues to pose strategic questions about how a University of Cambridge College should fulfil its role in the coming decades. It not only identifies prospects for building and renovation projects but also considers implications for education, people and the operations of the College in the context of a comprehensive sustainability and regenerative design strategy.
