Vienna’s New Musical Theatre: A Transformative 21st-Century Cultural Landmark
Developed in close partnership with ATG Entertainment, this project represents an exciting opportunity to create not only the largest but the first privately financed theatre in Vienna for over a hundred years. The project aspires to be a transformative 1800-seat musical theatre for the 21st century, efficient to operate, joyful, open hearted and welcoming to all, that will set new standards in international performing arts architecture.
Haworth Tompkins has been working in close collaboration with Viennese General Planner and Executive Architects Dietrich Untertrifaller (DTFLR) on the design of the building including external facades, auditorium, foyers and back of house spaces finely tuned to the unique location of the site within the historic Prater amusement park to the North-East of the city centre.
The aspirations for the project are to provide an 1800-seat musical theatre that can accommodate the technical needs of the largest sit-down West End and Broadway shows with an energised auditorium form inspired by the rich history of Viennese performing arts. A highly sustainable building that seeks to minimise both embodied and operational carbon emissions with a design that welcomes all, both local Viennese patrons and international tourists, with ambitious inclusive design aspirations. Construction started on site in Autumn 2025 and is proposed to complete by Autumn 2027.
