National Portrait Gallery Masterplan, 2016

study enabling successful Lottery funding bid

Located in the heart of London, the National Portrait Gallery welcomes over two million visitors every year and is widely recognised as one of the nation’s outstanding public galleries. Haworth Tompkins prepared a masterplan feasibility study setting out a broad framework to improve the existing site, and to support the ambitions of the Inspiring People plan.

Following a thorough space audit, and an extensive series of consultations with groups representing all areas of the Gallery we included proposals to improve visitor flow, including access and inclusion arrangements. The study also provided options for the best arrangement of public and support facilities whilst identifying potential new areas for development such as the East Wing and the Learning Centre.

Our masterplan proposal led to the successful award of £9.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2017 for the ‘Inspiring People: Transforming our National Portrait Gallery’ project.
