Hexagon Studio Theatre

New flexible performance venue for Reading

The project extends and refurbishes the existing brutalist 1977 Hexagon theatre to provide a flexible studio theatre and community arts facility. The works replace an underused single-storey backstage block with a compact new building containing a 200-seat (300 standing) adaptable auditorium, flexible foyer and rehearsal studio, a new scene dock and new back of house performer facilities. The new accommodation allows the venue to broaden its programme while enabling simultaneous use of the existing theatre and studio spaces.

The foyer is conceived as a working room rather than a circulation space. During the day it operates as a rehearsal environment sized to match the studio stage; during performances it becomes a bar and gathering space, opening to the podium through a glazed façade. An internal link connects the studio and Hexagon Theatre foyers, allowing the buildings to operate independently or together. A new bridge link will create a vibrant and active public space outside the new studio theatre, daytime and evening activation will animate Queens Walk and increase footfall towards the Hexagon.

The auditorium is designed as a compact volume bringing audience and performer into close proximity. Retractable seating and removable platforms allow multiple configurations including end-on, thrust, in-the-round and flat floor. Accessibility is integrated into all layouts with step-free routes and wheelchair positions at different levels.

The structure prioritises reuse and low embodied carbon. Existing concrete foundations are retained where possible and the new superstructure is primarily glulam timber with timber floors, supplemented by steel only where spans or height constraints require. The roof incorporates a hexagonal ventilation stack which assists natural airflow to the auditorium and foyers.

Environmental strategies combine passive and active systems: natural ventilation supported by mechanical systems for peak conditions, air- and ground-source heat pumps, heat-recovery ventilation, green roofs and permeable drainage.

Accessibility is a key driver of the proposals. The entire building will be accessible, with accessible WCs on each level, step-free connections to the existing Hexagon foyers and back of house corridors, wheelchair accessible dressing rooms, plus wheelchair positions for patrons at stalls and gallery level of the auditorium

Constructed from an expressed timber frame and wrapped in glazing and a lightweight perforated zinc screen, the new studio — due for completion in 2027 to mark the Hexagon’s 50th anniversary — will be an ambitious, sustainable, and adaptable theatre for the future of Reading, complementing the character of the original 1970s building while supporting its long-term viability and civic use.
