Punchdrunk Woolwich, 2022

venue for immersive theatrical experience

We are working with theatre company Punchdrunk on a new base in Woolwich. This venue, in south east London, is situated in the Creative District - a new hub on the site of the historic Royal Arsenal. Our project involves internal works to three Grade II Listed Buildings to create spaces for immersive performance and staff accommodation, as well as the construction of a temporary entrance pavilion building, built across an existing roadway to connect two of the Arsenal buildings for audience promenade circulation during performances. This pavilion is a lightweight timber-framed structure, clad in polycarbonate with a decorative mesh curtain façade veil conveying a “lantern” like convivial atmosphere during evening performances. The building is fully-demountable at the end of its life.

Great care has been taken to develop an architectural language and material palette for the pavilion that acknowledges the significance of the adjacent Grade II listed industrial buildings whilst announcing itself as a welcoming destination building. The largest listed building, originally an armaments ‘Carriage Inspection Shed’ is being fitted out with infrastructure to support Punchdrunk’s artistic repertoire including audience toilets, cloakroom, a ground floor bar, a mezzanine floor to house parts of the promenade performance alongside offices and ancillary accommodation. The installations are non-invasive to the historic building fabric and fully reversible. Construction work commenced on site in September 2021 and is due to complete in spring 2022.
