Malmö Stadsteater, 2022

major refurbishment of 19th century Swedish theatre

Malmö Hippodromen was built in 1898 as a dedicated circus venue. Malmö City Theatre currently operates three stages, the largest of which is housed in the historic building - located within a city block separated from the street by a row of shop fronts and restaurants.

An initial feasibility study by Haworth Tompkins and Charcoalblue outlined the potential to reconnect the auditorium to the street by the creation of a new link building that part covers an existing courtyard. This space provides an informal events space as well as a new entrance to the auditorium.

Alongside the redevelopment of the front of house and café, the project also involves a full refurbishment of the auditorium, increasing capacity by over 300 seats by using an adaptable layout, making it more suitable to host the theatre’s expanding repertoire.

The work at Malmö Stadsteater will begin next year and the building will completely reopen in 2022.
