new, affordable residential block in Wanstead

Working for the second time with Pocket Living, Gardner Close comprises of 20 one-bedrooms flats aimed at first time buyers who live and work in Redbridge. The site is located close to Wanstead High Street and plays host to a number of significant trees that have been carefully retained and considered as part of the project’s design. The building addresses the road, filling the gap between a row of terrace houses and Manor House Gardens. The calm and robust elevation incorporates generous punched windows and bespoke metalwork that is in dialogue with the material palette of the surrounding buildings.

Green window frames reference those of The Shrubbery Building, a 1930’s Grade II listed apartment block located to the north of the site. Pink metalwork screens the external galleries and is matched to the colour of the brickwork. The screen has been designed using a combination of three standard panel sizes that are repeated across the façade. To the rear of the building amenity space is provided in the form of a shared garden that provides residents with space to relax, socialise and make use of the growing beds.
