Abu Dhabi Gallery, 2002

a new cultural building

Haworth Tompkins was runner up in a limited competition to design a new cultural building for Abu Dhabi. It comprised a 2,000-seat multi-form performance space, a smaller courtyard theatre and an art gallery. The site was on a prominent peninsula looking back over the bay towards the city of Abu Dhabi.

A high-level filigree shading canopy of glass, photovoltaic cells and timber supported on slender columns was proposed, under which the various components of the scheme were arranged in successive courtyard spaces. The dominant form of the main auditorium and stage house was expressed beneath a mosaic-covered dome, clearly visible from the distant city as a new landmark.
