Haworth Tompkins participated in an invited competition organised by Southwark Council for a housing site on Wansey Road. The proposals explored environmental sustainability and the idea of homes for life. The proposed units exploited the full depth of the site providing a courtyard garden between the main house and a garden room, which could provide a number of varied uses and adapt to changes in the occupants lifestyle over time. A plot width of 5 metres allowed generously proportioned spaces for a two storey maisonette accessed directly from street level and extending into the rear garden space over which, a terrace of 10 metre wide apartments could be accessed from two cores containing a lift and a staircase.
