Maydew House
Haworth Tompkins have been appointed by the London Borough of Southwark to lead the ambitious regeneration of Maydew House and the associated Bede Centre building, located on the Abbeyfield Estate on the southern edge of Southwark Park. Maydew House is an existing 26 storey tower built by the GLC in the early 1960s. A full refurbishment of the existing 144 scissor flats is proposed, and the addition of five new storeys will provide 24 new homes. We have redesigned the ground and first floor of the tower to provide a new entrance, resident facilities and a new Community Centre for Bede, a local charity. Our brief also includes the design of 88 new homes in a high quality new building located on the Bede Centre site, adjacent to Maydew House. Landscape architects, Farrer Huxley, are also developing a masterplan for the wider Abbeyfield Estate, which aims to provide better quality amenity space and play space for residents, and improve connectivity to the surrounding areas.
