The National Theatre wishes to build on its current success to increase the popularity and visibility of the building, to expand participation and education activities, to engage more closely with the neighbourhood and to make the theatre more sustainable. Haworth Tompkins was approached by the National Theatre to help it develop a comprehensive master plan for improving and extending their building on the South Bank.
The brief aims to improve the building's public welcome, to open its interior, to provide facilities for new operations and radically improve its environmental performance. The first phase of work includes a new workshop extension to the south, a new bar to replace the service yard on the riverfront and the remodelling the Cottesloe theatre and surrounding workshops to create a new education and participation centre.
