NORTH WALL PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE ON ITV NEWS

The North Wall Performing Arts Centre in Oxford featured on the ITV Thames Valley Regional News on Thursday 11th September. Joanna Sutherland the project architect was interviewed as part of the feature that was aired in connection with the RIBA National and Conservation Awards that the project has been awarded.



LONDON LIBRARY PHASE 2 STARTS ON SITE

September 2008

Following the successful completion of the first phase of the London Library redevelopment, TS Elliott House, the enabling works for the second phase has started on site. The second phase involves major alterations and extensions to the main building and includes the installation of over 5 km of new shelving. A link will be formed to connect the main building with TS Eliot House and new staircases and lift installed to improve circulation. Environmental conditions will be upgraded in all the affected spaces. The project is being procured through a construction mangement contract with MACE and is due for completion at the end of 2009.



FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR BUSH THEATRE

Haworth Tompkins have recently completed a feasibility study for a new home for the Bush Theatre. The new venue will seat an audience of between 80-130 people in a range of configurations and will provide improved front and back of house facilities for the well respected production venue.



RCA PHASE 1 STARTS ON SITE

September 2008

The new Painting School for the RCA has started on site. The remodelled industrial building in Battersea is the first phase of a new campus which, along with the recently refurbished Sculpture School, will provide a new home for the RCA's Department of Fine and Applied Arts. Haworth Tompkins have recently submitted a planning application to Wandsworth Borough Council for the latter phases of the campus development. The selected contractor, Life Build, start on site in September and are due to complete the works for the new academic year in September 2009.



NEW PUBLICATIONS

August 2008

Haworth Tompkins Young Vic Theatre is published as a case study in the latest issue of the Contemporary Theatre Review (Vol 18 Issue 2). The article by Juliet Rufford is an edited chapter from her thesis on the practice's theatre work. The Contemporary Theatre Review is published by Routledge.

Alliance House in Stoke Newington is one of only two british projects featured in a new international review of new houses and residential buildings 'Town Houses and more' by Sibylle Kramer. 'Town Houses and more' is published by Braun.



NEW PROJECT IN KINGSTON UPON THAMES

July 2008

Haworth Tompkins has been commissioned to carry out a design to improve and extend an existing 1970s commercial development on the riverside in Kingston upon Thames. A planning application is due to be submitted at the end of the year.



NATIONAL THEATRE CONSERVATION PLAN

July 2008

Haworth Tompkins has published a draft Conservation Plan for Denys Lasdun's National Theatre. Produced with consultation with the National Theatre, EH, 20th Century Society, Southwark Conservation Officers, as well as Susan Lasdun and surviving members of Denys Lasduns original design team, the document seeks to provide a framework for future developments that will preserve and enhance the quality of the original design whilst providing opportunities for the National Theatre to develop their programme of activities. Haworth Tompkins is now working on a framework for the future development of the National Theatre site which is due to be complete in January 2008.



'ARCHITECTURE: CRAFT & CONTEXT' AT THE EMBASSY OF JAPAN

Graham Haworth was an invited speaker at "Architecture: Craft & Context", an exhibition and lecture series hosted by the Embassy of Japan on 24th June, organised by Toh Shimazaki Arhitecture as a part of the London Festival of Architecture Embassies Project.

Graham gave a presentation on the work of Haworth Tompkins, together with young Japanese architect Souhei Inamura, who presented his work in Tokyo; the presentations were followed by a discussion chaired by Takero Shimazaki to explore how architects approach design in such contrasting cities as Tokyo and London.



2008 RIBA NATIONAL AWARDS

June 2008

The Northwall Arts Centre in Oxford and the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre were both recognised in the the 2008 RIBA National Awards.

The Northwall Arts Centre was one of the 14 National Awards and as such will be on the long list for the 2008 Stirling Prize. The award citation said of the new facility for St Edwards School: 'The design and execution are exemplary. Clarity of concept is matched by inventive and direct use of materials, together with careful integration of structure and services'.

The Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre along with the Iroko Housing development completed in 2001 were recognised among the achievements of Coin Street Community Builders in their being announced as the 2008 RIBA Client of the Year Award.



COIN STREET NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

June 2008

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was joined by Ed Balls, secretary of state for children, schools and families, for the visit to Stamford Street Neighbourhood Centre on 23 June 2008 where they met children, staff and parents at the nursery. "This is exactly the kind of children's centre that we are wanting to have all around the country, which has got children having fun and learning, but there's also services being provided here by midwives, the health service, there's healthy eating in the kitchen, it's rooted in the community, it's a really beautiful sight," said Ed Balls. Having already picked up an RIBA regional award last month, the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre is up for a national RIBA Award at a awards ceremony on Friday.



LONDON LIBRARY PHASE 1 NAMED T S ELIOT HOUSE

June 2008

In a fitting gesture to close Phase 1 of the redevelopment of the London Library and usher in Phase 2, TS Eliot house has been formally named in a ceremony attended by Mrs Valerie Eliot on Wednesday 11 June. Construction of Phase 2 will start on site in July with a programmed completion in November 2009.



ALDEBURGH MUSIC, SNAPE MALTINGS

June 2008

Listed Building approval has been obtained for a new artist's studio at Snape Maltings. Designed as a Corten steel box within an existing ruined dovecote, the studio will provide facilities for visiting artists to work with Aldeburgh Music. Planning permission has also been received for a new box office / reception for the concert hall, as part of a general reworking of the Aldeburgh Music campus.



PHASE 2 OF THE YOUNG VIC OPENS

June 2008

The second phase of the redevelopment of the Young Vic was opened by Alan Davey, Chief Executive of the Arts Council, and Alan Grieve, Chairman of the Jerwood Foundation. The second phase consists of the Jerwood Pod, which will provide space for three associate companies, and some additional dressing room and storage facilities.



HAWORTH TOMPKINS WINS TWO RIBA REGIONAL AWARDS

Haworth Tompkins have won an RIBA London Regional Award for Coin Street neighbourhood centre, and an RIBA South Regional Award for the North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford. Winners of the 2008 RIBA Awards were announced at a ceremony at the Young Vic, which won last year's 'London Building of the Year' award for Haworth Tompkins.



DES RES - LONDON'S HOUSING CHALLENGE

Haworth Tompkins' affordable housing proposal at Peabody Avenue in Pimlico for the Peabody Trust, which has recently receive planning approval, is part of an exhibition at the New London Architecture building in Store Street, London.
The exhibition entitled "Des Res: London's Housing Challenge' fully explores the issues affecting planning, designing and developing London's housing. The exhibition runs from 24th April until 14th June 2008.



HAWORTH TOMPKINS COMMENDED TWICE AT AIA/UK AWARDS

Two projects by Haworth Tompkins have been commended at this years UK Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects Excellence in Design Awards.



The Coin Street neighbourhood centre for Coin Street Community Builders and the Young Vic Theatre
redevelopment both received awards at the recent ceremony held at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf.

The Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre is featured in two International publications this month.



Polish Design Magazine 'Vox Design' features an article on artist Antoni Malinowski and his collaboration
with Haworth Tompkins at Coin Street. Read the full article (in Polish only) via the Vox Design website.

Korean Architecture and Interior Magazine 'Plus' features a detailed article, also on the Coin Street

NATIONAL THEATRE STUDIO NOW COMPLETE

The refurbishment and extension of the National Theatre Studio on The Cut in Waterloo is now complete.

The Studio is known as the "engine room of British theatre" and provides new and refurbished spaces for actors,
directors, musicians and collaborators to experiment and develop new work, independent of the pressure of
staging a commercial production.

The original Grade II listed building has been refurbished, preserving the paint and glitter of the old scenery
painting workshop. It now incorporates two rehearsal studios, a new publicly accessible archive for the National
Theatre as well as an education centre and private study rooms for writers.

The completed project has been reviewed by Ellis Woodman in the 20th March edition of Building Design.

HAWORTH TOMPKINS WIN TWO CIVIC TRUST AWARDS

March 2008

The North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford, and the Young Vic Theatre in Southwark both received full awards at this
years Civic Trust Awards held in Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 12th March.

The Jury commented on the North Wall as "a delightful transformation of a listed Victorian swimming pool into a
vibrant school arts facility.... A skilful and imaginative scheme, showing careful detailing and a high standard of
design which should provide inspiration to both pupils and visitors. A welcome resource for both the city and the
school."

Of the Young Vic Theatre the jury commented "the re-building of these facilities has acted as a local catalyst and
has encouraged the community to use the facility as a venue and meeting place. Local people, theatre users,
performers and staff were all consulted about the design, and their continuing involvement is evidence of the
success of the scheme."

PLANNING RECEIVED FOR RCA DEPARTMENT OF PAINTING

March 2008

Planning permission for a new Royal College of Art building in Battersea has been granted by Wandsworth Council.
The new building is to be home to the Painting Department, currently divided between two separate sites in
Kensington and Battersea. The development will provide excellent facilities for all the Painting students to work
together under one roof for the first time in over 10 years. Alumni of the RCA Painting Department include David
Hockney, Sir Peter Blake, Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley, Tracey Emin and Chris Ofili.

Construction work will begin in August 2008 with a scheduled completion date of May 2009, ready for the Painting
department to move into its new home for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The new Painting Department is the first phase of the RCA's ambitious plan for a major new campus in Battersea
also designed by Haworth Tompkins. The campus will eventually house the Schools of Fine Art and Applied Art, and
also provide accommodation for start-up units for new businesses in the fields of art and design as well as a gallery
and lecture theatre.

MUMMERY + SCHNELLE GALLERY

Haworth Tompkins have completed a new gallery space for Andrew Mummery and Wolfram Schnelle on Great
Tichfield Street in central London. The gallery located on the ground floor of a former Victorian print works will
exhibit work by young international contemporary artists such as Carol Rhodes, Zebeddee Jones, Ori Gerhst and
Merlin James.

USTINOV THEATRE COMPLETED

February 2008

The Ustinov Theatre has been completed this month, on time and on budget. The project took 18 months from
conception to completion and involved the refurbishment of an existing studio theatre, including the auditorium,
front of house and back of house spaces. The opening night for the first show 'Breakfast With Mugabe' is on
Friday 22nd February.

The Ustinov Theatre is one of three theatres which comprise the Theatre Royal Bath, the other two being the
Main House and the Egg Theatre for children, young people and their families completed by Haworth Tompkins
in 2005.

A completed project study will be posted on our website soon.

2008 BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AWARDS

February 2008

Our studio has been nominated twice in this years Building Construction Awards; for Practice of the Year and
Building of the Year for the Young Vic. Results are announced in March.

TRAVELLING EXHIBITION

February 2008

The travelling exhibition Unaufgeraumt / As Found: Urban Reaimations and the Minimal Intervention, curated by the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel featuring the Young Vic will be on show at the Danish Architecture Centre in Copenhagen during March 2008, then onto the Espai d'Art Contemporani in Castello, Spain during June/July 2008.

Spanish publication a + t features two recent Haworth Tompkins projects in its latest Civilities II book published this month; the Coin Street neighbourhood centre and the Young Vic Theatre. This follows on from the inclusion of the Iroko housing project which was featured in a+t's Density IV book published last year.
