The London Library is an independant lending library mainly covering the humanities.
It was founded by Thomas Carlyle in 1841 and is now, with some one million books and periodicals,
the largest independent subscription library in the world. |

From its inception the Library has adapted itself to meet the requirements of readers and scholarship. Haworth Tompkins' proposals include the provision of more space for the collection, for staff and for members; the adoption of new technology; the conservation of book stacks; and the improvement in the environmental conditions of the existing building. | ![]() |
In order to allow this expansion the Library acquired Duchess House, a late 1980's office building that adjoins the existing Library through a modest and narrow party wall connection. Duchess House was developed as the first phase of a two phase project, providing much needed staff support space, conservation studio and additional book stacks. | ![]() |
